Web Home Page: Lake Malawi National Park covers a total area of 88 km, comprising most of the rugged Nankhumba Peninsula, a section of Lake Malawi, and 12 nearby islands. The clear water of the lake supports a spectacular variety of tropical freshwater fish, with more than 450 species recorded. Other habitats include sandy beaches, swamps, wooded hillsides, sand-dunes and reed marshes. The birdlife is particularly rich; and species include a variety of kingfishers, fish eagle, heron, jacana and egret as well as large colonies of white-breasted cormorant, which breed on Boadzulu and Mumbo islands. The most rewarding birding months are May / June and November / December. Location: Southern Malawi; east of Lilongwe. Access: From Lilongwe take the road to Salima and from there turn south (m5) driving for about 70 km; turn left and follow this road (M10) eastward, turning left again to Monkey Bay and Cape Maclear. The authorities advise that the best way to visit the park is by boat. Accommodation: None. There are hotels nearby at Club Makokola and Nkopola Lodge. Golden Sands Holiday Camp at Cape Maclear has self-catering accommodation and a camping site. Other facilities: A network of game-viewing roads; walking, drive and snorkelling are permitted; boats may be hired. There is a bar at Golden Sands.
